Shandong (green) and our plants in East Asia

Shandong lies on China's east coast, centred on the Shandong Peninsula, which juts out between the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea. Port towns line the peninsula, and in 2024 the province produced 8.25 million tonnes of marine products, the most of any province in China.

All three of our plants are in port cities on this coast, a short sea crossing from Japan. Qingdao to Fukuoka is about 955 km in a straight line, and even Tokyo is only about 1,737 km away.

Qingdao

On the south coast of the peninsula, facing Jiaozhou Bay. Shandong's largest economy and one of China's major port cities.

Yantai

A port on the peninsula's north coast, where the Bohai meets the Yellow Sea. Known for fisheries and for its apples.

Rizhao

A port city at the southeastern tip of Shandong on the Yellow Sea, about 105 km southwest of Qingdao.

Certifications & safety standards

Certifications

Day-to-day production is managed to international food-safety standards (HACCP, BRC and ISO 22000) and to the MSC standard for sustainable fishing.

Food hygiene

HACCP

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point

A food-safety method that analyzes hazards such as pathogens and foreign matter at every step from receiving to shipment, then monitors and records the critical control points.

What it means for youEvery critical step is monitored and on record

Global food safety

BRC

BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety

A global food-safety standard first developed by the British Retail Consortium, now known as BRCGS. It is one of the standards benchmarked by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and is often required by major retailers.

What it means for youPlants run to the level major retailers require

Food safety management

ISO 22000

Food safety management systems

The International Organization for Standardization's standard for food-safety management systems. It combines HACCP principles with organization-wide management such as policy, objectives and internal audits.

What it means for youSafety is managed company-wide, not just on the line

Sustainable fishing

MSC

Marine Stewardship Council

The Marine Stewardship Council's certification for sustainable, well-managed fisheries. At the processing and distribution stage, Chain of Custody (CoC) certification confirms that certified seafood is kept separate and traceable.

What it means for youA way to choose seafood that protects fish stocks

Quality control built for food safety

Quality control

Our Quality Control Department is based at our plants in China and manages everything to Japanese hygiene standards (HACCP), BRC and ISO 22000, consistently from plant entry to final shipment.

Hygiene

Hygiene on par with Japan

With a QC department on site, we manage to HACCP. Equipment and work clothes are sanitized every 30 minutes, and dedicated hygiene teams are assigned to the processes that need them.

Craftsmanship

Craftsmanship by hand

Flounder products demand a delicate touch, so every worker approaches the job as a craftsman, and careful manual work stays at the center of processing.

Inspection

Two-stage inspection

Inspectors check every product by sight and touch, then X-ray and metal detectors run as the final inspection.

Hygiene and inspection steps
